MAID OF HONOR VS. MATRON OF HONOR: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

There are so many terms that you will encounter when planning a wedding that it can frankly get overwhelming. While it’s SO special to honor your loved ones with important titles for your wedding, the nuances between certain terms can leave your head spinning.

In this article, we will discuss the key differences between the terms maid of honor and matron of honor. Which is which, and can you have both?

ARE A MAID OF HONOR AND MATRON OF HONOR THE SAME THING?
They are actually different! The biggest distinction between the two is that title of “Maid of Honor” is traditionally given to an unmarried woman, while a “Matron of Honor” is a title given to a married woman. The good news is that because they are different roles, you can have both a Maid of Honor and a Matron of Honor in your wedding. You can also choose to have one but not the other.

CAN A MARRIED WOMAN STILL BE A MAID OF HONOR?
Yes, it is very common for a married woman to still have the title of “Maid of Honor” since that is the most commonly used term for the lead role of the bridal party. You can always ask if your maid/matron of honor has a preference, or you can stick to the traditional titles of married = matron, and unmarried = maid.

DO A MAID OF HONOR AND MATRON OF HONOR SHARE THE SAME DUTIES?
Yes! The Maid and Matron of Honor share the same duties. These include making speeches, wearing a special gown, and helping with planning/day of duties. Really, the only difference between the two roles is the title!

The fun thing about weddings is that you can put your own spin on tradition. The most common bridal party combinations are:

  • Having a maid of honor + bridesmaids
  • Having a matron of honor + bridesmaids
  • Having a matron of honor, maid of honor + bridesmaids
  • Just bridesmaids
  • No bridesmaids
  • Mixed-gendered wedding parties and “Best Person” duties
